The City of Chilliwack has awarded a design contract to MQN Architects for a new multi-use facility to be built next to the Landing Sports Centre on Spadina Avenue. The contract, valued at $226,485 (plus taxes), marks a step forward in expanding the city’s recreational infrastructure, addressing long-standing community needs for additional indoor space.
Initially envisioned as a pickleball facility, the project has evolved in response to feedback from residents and user groups. A review conducted by the City highlighted the growing need for dry floor space across various sports and community activities, particularly for youth, adults, and seniors. There is also a significant shortage of event space during peak seasons, especially between October and December.
The location adjacent to the existing Landing Sports Centre is strategic, allowing the City to streamline operations by taking advantage of existing staffing and maintenance resources.
The City opted to award the design contract directly to MQN Architects, a firm with 40 years of experience in designing recreational and community facilities. MQN has previously worked on key projects in Chilliwack, including Rink 3 at the Sardis Sports Complex and the Chilliwack Curling Club, which is located next to the proposed site. This continuity in design and experience with similar facilities made MQN a logical choice for the project.
The decision to directly engage MQN was announced through a Notice of Intent, and no objections were raised, allowing the City to proceed efficiently with the selection.
The new facility will use a sprung fabric structure, a building type known for its cost-effectiveness, durability, and flexibility. This construction style is particularly well-suited to providing large, adaptable indoor spaces for a variety of sports and community events. Given MQN's expertise in designing pickleball courts and multi-use spaces, the City is confident that the facility will meet the diverse needs of the community.
With the contract now in place, the City is moving into the design phase. Once completed, this new facility will help to relieve pressure on existing recreation spaces and provide a much-needed venue for both sports and community events.
The City of Chilliwack continues to make thoughtful investments in its recreational infrastructure, ensuring that it meets the evolving needs of residents while making efficient use of public funds.
