The Chilliwack City Council has officially approved the redevelopment of the historic Cheam View United Church site at 45835 Spadina Avenue. This decision will see the cherished church property transformed into a 6-storey mixed-use building that provides 64 affordable rental units and a dedicated "club/lodge" area for community gatherings, ensuring that the site continues to serve the community.

This project, a collaboration between Mamele'awt Qweesome/To'o Housing Society (MQHS) and Cheam View United Church, addresses the urgent need for affordable housing in Chilliwack while preserving the site's legacy as a centre for fellowship and support.

Community Endorsements

Lynda Wiebe, a local resident with deep family ties to the church, expressed her support, stating, "My family history with that United Church goes back many generations, my grandfather who was F.G. Leary was an active member of that church and a very community-active person and I know he would have been happy to see this new development come to fruition."

Pat Clark, President of the Chilliwack Museum and Historical Society, also voiced his support, acknowledging the challenges and significance of the project: "The addition of 64 residential units as well as the continuation of community outreach activities in the 'club/lodge' area is of critical importance to our community. Redeveloping a site in any downtown area comes with many challenges. We acknowledge the plan requires several variances to make it work at this location and commend those who brought solutions to the table."

Amber Price, a local business owner, stated, "This project, a partnership between Cheam View United Church and Mamele'awt Qweesome Housing Society, will bring much-needed affordable housing options for our community members who are struggling to meet their housing needs."

Margaret Pfoh, CEO of the Aboriginal Housing Management Association (AHMA), emphasized the importance of the project: "Healthy, thriving communities start with equitable housing solutions and it is AHMA’s sincere hope that the proposed affordable housing project is approved to create safe and sustainable homes for those most in need."
